I've known quite a few retail buyers, but they all worked for either urban retailers or higher end streetwear/sneaker retailers... some for online stores with similar products. And it's always seemed like such a fun job.

You chose the merchandise that reaches the consumer. You deal directly with brands. You, in essence, are the sartorial gatekeeper, trendsetter.

Bernadine Carricket held that position and was a true pioneer - a black woman in the 1950s buying for a department store with multi-ethnic consumer demographics.

And she dressed sharply while doing it!
