1957 photo of a Chicago married couple (Dr. Clyde Phillips and his wife) from the Life Magazine story about housing discrimination.

The 30s and 40s pictures from Life Magazine I posted earlier were great, but I LOVE the 1950s and 1960s. The pictures in this post are absolutely wonderful!

One of my favorite books in 4th or 5th grade was an autobiographical novel called Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry about the 1957 integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. To find this picture of Minniejean Brown, the author of the novel, and the National Guard from 1957 in front of the school was amazing!

  1. What a fantastic collection of photos. The ones showing ignorance and fear are still shocking to me and make me feel sad. How brave were those students who 'integrated' despite it though?!!! The others are beautiful photos I have not seen before and I truly enjoyed. Such style in the 'old days'! Long live 'vintage'!
